Gertrude Elliot

Funded in 1997 through a bequest from Grace E. Elliott, a lifelong resident of New Paltz. Grace designated a portion of her estate to SUNY New Paltz for the establishment of a scholarship named in honor of her mother, Gertrude M. Elliott ’26, a Clionian sister. The scholarship provides annual support for students from either New Paltz or Yonkers, New York.

“Gertrude and Frank Elliott owned the farm at the intersection of Horsenden Road and North Ohioville Road. The house is still occupied by a New Paltz family. Back in the day, my siblings and I had to walk to that intersection to be picked up by the school bus and I saw Mrs. Elliott on her front porch many times. In fact, my grandparents who came to New Paltz in the early 1930s, were friends of the Elliotts. Over the years I would see Ms. Grace Elliott in town which made me remember all the fun we had walking up to her driveway each morning.

A historical note: Frank Elliott was the Town of New Paltz Superintendent in the 1950s. When he heard that the NYS Thruway was coming through, he really wanted a bridge on Horsenden Rd. Soooooooooooo, he had his men drive their trucks back and forth over the traffic counter that was on the road which increased the volume of traffic enough that Horsenden Road was chosen for a bridge."
